Calories, joules, and why your electric bill uses neither
A granola bar, a physics homework problem, and an electric bill are all describing the exact same physical quantity: energy. They just never agreed on how to write it down. One uses Calories, one uses joules, and one uses kilowatt-hours, and if you've ever tried to compare them directly, you already know none of the numbers look like they belong to the same idea.
The Calorie on your food label is secretly 1,000 calories
This is the one that catches people off guard. A calorie, technically, is defined as the energy needed to raise one gram of water by one degree Celsius, a small, specific amount (4.184 joules). But nutrition labels use a completely different, much bigger unit that happens to share the same name: the food Calorie, written with a capital C and sometimes spelled out as kcal, which is exactly 1,000 of the small calories. So when a label says a snack has "200 Calories," it actually means 200,000 of the technical calories used in a chemistry class. This isn't a modern mistake, it dates back to 19th-century American nutrition science and the convention never got cleaned up, so it just persists. If you're converting a food label here, use kcal, not cal, or the number will be off by a factor of 1,000.
Joules are what physics actually uses
The joule is the proper SI unit of energy, one newton of force applied over one meter, and it's what shows up under the hood of essentially every physics calculation. It's also just an inconveniently small unit for describing everyday amounts of energy: a slice of toast is somewhere around 800,000 joules, a number nobody wants to deal with casually, which is exactly why food labels, electric bills, and gas ratings all reach for bigger, field-specific units instead of quoting raw joules.
Kilowatt-hours are just power times time
A kilowatt-hour isn't really a separate kind of unit, it's a rate (kilowatts, which is power) multiplied by a duration (hours), and the result happens to be an amount of energy. Run a 1,000-watt appliance for one hour and you've used exactly one kilowatt-hour, which works out to 3,600,000 joules. Electric bills use it instead of joules for the same reason food labels use Calories instead of calories: the resulting numbers stay in a range a person can actually read at a glance.
BTU, and the strange "ton" that isn't a weight
The British Thermal Unit, the energy needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit, mostly survives today in HVAC and furnace ratings, especially in the US. And if you've ever seen an air conditioner's capacity listed in "tons," that's not a typo and it's definitely not a weight, it's short for a ton of refrigeration: the cooling power needed to melt one ton of ice over 24 hours, a unit that dates back to when ice was the actual cooling method, before mechanical refrigeration existed. One ton of refrigeration works out to 12,000 BTU per hour, and the name simply never got updated once the ice was no longer involved.
