Why feet, inches, and miles are the sizes they are

A meter is defined, right now, by how far light travels in a fraction of a second. A foot is defined, more or less, by an old English king's shoe. These are not the same kind of unit, and the gap between how they were made says a lot about why the world ended up with two competing measurement systems instead of one.

The imperial units came from bodies, not math

The inch, foot, and yard all trace back to human-scale reference points, in ways that were never that precise to begin with. The story goes that the inch was set as the length of three barleycorns laid end to end, under a statute from Edward II in the 1300s. The foot is, unsurprisingly, roughly a human foot. The yard gets attributed to Henry I, who supposedly decreed it to be the distance from his nose to the tip of his outstretched thumb. None of this was rigorous by modern standards, and different towns and trades kept their own slightly different versions of each unit for centuries. It took until 1959 for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and a few others to agree on one international definition: a yard equals exactly 0.9144 meters, and everything else in the system (the foot, the inch) is derived from that.

Why a mile is 5,280 feet and not a rounder number

5,280 looks like a strange number to build a unit around, until you know it's not the number anyone started with. The mile comes from the Roman mille passus, a thousand paces, each pace being two steps. England kept the word but not the exact length, and eventually locked the mile in at 8 furlongs under a 1593 statute of Elizabeth I. A furlong (literally "furrow long") was the distance a team of oxen could plow before needing a rest, standardized at 660 feet. Multiply it out, 8 furlongs times 660 feet, and you get 5,280. The number looks arbitrary only if you don't know it was built from a farming unit, not chosen directly.

The metric side has its own strange history

The meter has actually been redefined four separate times since it was introduced during the French Revolution. It started in 1791 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator, measured along a meridian through Paris, an ambitious and not entirely accurate survey project. In 1889 it became the length of a specific platinum- iridium bar kept in France. In 1960 it switched to a count of wavelengths of light from krypton-86. Since 1983, it's been defined as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458th of a second, which is precise enough that it will never need to change again. The imperial units, by contrast, were mostly standardized by tying them to the meter, not the other way around.

A detail most people never hear about

Until fairly recently, the US quietly used two different definitions of a foot. The standard international foot (0.3048 meters exactly) is what everyone uses day to day, but surveyors kept using a slightly different "US survey foot" for land measurements and some state coordinate systems, a holdover from an older conversion factor. The difference is tiny, about 2 parts per million, but it was enough to cause real discrepancies in large land surveys. The National Geodetic Survey officially retired the US survey foot at the end of 2022, more than 60 years after the rest of the country moved on.

None of this history changes what a meter or a mile is worth today, that's just arithmetic, and the converter above handles it instantly. But it's a decent reminder that "standard" units are rarely as tidy as they look; they're just old agreements that stuck.
